The chapel at the USNA is a defining feature of the campus, but, due to advanced deterioration, the dome must be replaced rather than repaired (as was originally planned). A new roofing membrane will protect the interior of the chapel throughout construction, and weddings, funerals, services, and regular visitations will continue as normal.
Speaking with Patch.com, USNA director of media relations and public affairs Jennifer M. Erickson stated that work on the chapel should conclude in fall or winter 2019, although no specific schedule has been released. Made out of copper, the chapel dome will appear bright and shiny at first, before turning a darker brown. Its typical green patina will reappear within 20 to 25 years.
