Natural gas, an increasingly important energy resource for the world economy, is created deep in the earth, where processes occurring over million-year timescales have formed it. These processes began when ancient flora and fauna died and formed a layer of carbon-rich material.
Over time, the organic layers were buried under rock and sand. Extreme pressure and heat then transformed the material into the fossil fuels - oil, coal, and natural gas - that support commerce today.
Chemically, the vast majority of natural gas is methane, but it may also include compounds of ethane, butane, propane, nitrogen, and oxygen. Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas has environmental benefits. For example, the burning of natural gas results in up to 30-percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions, making it a “greener” fuel alternative.
